When your iPhone 13 stops vibrating for calls, texts, or notifications, it can be easy to miss important alerts. The good news is that this is usually a software or settings issue you can fix yourself.
Force Restart Your iPhone
This is the first thing I'd try. A force restart clears out temporary software glitches that can affect the vibration motor. It doesn't erase any data.
On your iPhone 13, quickly press and release the Volume Up button, then quickly press and release the Volume Down button. Immediately after, press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo appear on the screen, then let go. This takes about 15 seconds.
Check Your Ring/Silent Switch
Look at the left side of your iPhone, above the volume buttons. You'll see a small physical switch. If you see an orange stripe, the switch is in Silent mode.
In Silent mode, your phone won't ring, but it should still vibrate by default. Flip the switch so the orange stripe is not visible to put it back in Ring mode. Sometimes toggling this switch back and forth can re-establish the connection.
Verify Sound and Haptics Settings
Open the Settings app and go to Sounds & Haptics. Make sure the switch for Vibrate on Ring is turned on (green). Right below it, also ensure Vibrate on Silent is enabled.
While you're here, scroll down to the "Sounds and Vibration Patterns" section. Tap on Ringtone or Text Tone. At the top of the tone selection screen, you'll see a "Vibration" option. Tap it to make sure a vibration pattern is selected and not set to "None".
Test with System Haptics
Still in Settings > Sounds & Haptics, scroll all the way to the bottom. Find the switch for System Haptics and make sure it's on.
With this enabled, you should feel subtle taps when you perform actions like swiping down for Control Center or using the toggle switches in Settings. If you don't feel these system haptics, it points to a broader issue.
Review App-Specific Notification Settings
If vibrations are missing only from specific apps like Messages or Mail, the notification settings for that app are the place to check. Go to Settings > Notifications.
Tap on the app that's not vibrating. First, make sure "Allow Notifications" is turned on at the top. Then, tap on the specific notification type (like "Messages" for the Texts app). Look for the Sounds option, sometimes vibration settings are linked here. Ensure a sound is selected, as vibration often accompanies it.
Update to the Latest iOS
Software bugs in older versions of iOS can sometimes disable haptic feedback. Since your iPhone 13 can run iOS 18, it's worth checking for an update.
Go to Settings > General > Software Update. If an update is available, tap "Download and Install". I'd recommend plugging your phone into power using a reliable Lightning cable and connecting to Wi-Fi before starting the update.
Reset All Settings
This is a more thorough step that resets every system setting on your phone back to factory defaults. It won't delete your photos, messages, or apps, but you will need to reconfigure things like Wi-Fi passwords, wallpaper, and privacy permissions.
To do this, navigate to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone. Tap on Reset, then choose Reset All Settings. Enter your passcode and confirm. Your phone will restart.
Consider a Hardware Issue
If you've tried all the software fixes and feel no vibration at all, not even when testing system haptics or during a force restart, the Taptic Engine (Apple's name for the vibration motor) might have a problem.
The Taptic Engine is a small, precise component. It can be affected if your iPhone has suffered any liquid damage or a significant drop. Since the iPhone 13 is a few years old now, general wear is also a possibility.
You can use your phone's built-in diagnostics. Go to the Apple Support app or contact Apple Support remotely, they can run a diagnostic to check the hardware functionality of the Taptic Engine.
